Privacy and terms.
How we handle your information, and the rules for this website, your account and the camera service. Written to be read, not skimmed past.
At a glance
We collect only what the service needs. Enough to run your cameras, alert the right people and bill you.
Your footage is yours. We don’t watch it, sell it or use it to advertise.
We never sell your information. Not to anyone, ever.
You stay in control. See, correct or delete your information whenever you like.
Privacy notice
1Who we are
Under the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA), we are the responsible party for your account, billing and service information. For your camera footage, we act on your behalf as an operator: it is your footage, from your home, and we handle it only to run the service for you.
2What we collect
We collect what we need to run your cameras, alert the right people and bill you. Nothing more.
| What | Examples | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Account | Your name, mobile number and, if you give it, email address. One-time sign-in codes. | You |
| Your home | Service address, the homes and cameras on your account, and household members you invite. If you tap “Use my location”, a map pin for your home. | You |
| Emergency contacts | Their names and mobile numbers, taken from the contact you pick on your phone. | You |
| Cameras | Model, device ID, online status, firmware version and settings. The Wi-Fi network name a camera joins. | Your cameras and the app |
| Detections and alerts | When a person is detected, on which camera, the snapshot or clip attached to the alert, and how you answered: Impempe!, I know them, or no answer. | Your cameras and the app |
| Footage | Live view while you watch it, and any clips kept with your alerts. | Your cameras |
| Your voice | Only when you hold Talk: your voice is sent to your camera so you can speak through it. Listening to your camera does not use your phone’s microphone. | Your phone |
| Billing | Invoices, payments, payment status and a payment reference for subscriptions. Never your full card number. | You and our payment provider |
| Support | Messages, and call notes, when you contact us. | You |
| Phone and app | Phone model, operating system version, app version, the push notification address your phone gives us, and your IP address. | The app |
| This website | Standard server logs: IP address, pages requested and time. | Your browser |
Your Wi-Fi password passes from the app to the camera once, so the camera can join your network. We don’t store it.
What the app does not do: it doesn’t read your address book, photos or files, it doesn’t use your phone’s camera except to scan a family invitation QR code (the picture is not saved or uploaded), and it doesn’t track your location in the background or when you aren’t using it.
3What the app asks your phone for
The app asks for access only when a feature needs it, and explains why first. You can say no, or change your mind later in your phone’s settings; the rest of the app keeps working unless the table says otherwise.
| Permission | What we use it for | If you say no |
|---|---|---|
| Notifications | Alerts from your cameras and from your family, friends and neighbours, including the alarm sound. | You won’t be warned unless the app is open. We strongly recommend allowing them. |
| Location (precise or approximate) | One time, only when you tap “Use my location” while adding a home: it places a pin and fills in the service address, which you check before you send it. Never in the background. | Type the address instead. |
| Microphone | Only while you hold Talk, so you can speak through your camera. | You can still watch and listen; Talk is unavailable. |
| Phone camera | Only to scan a family invitation QR code. Nothing is saved or uploaded. | Type the invitation code instead. |
| Local network | To find and talk to your cameras on your own Wi-Fi while setting up and viewing. | Cameras on your Wi-Fi can’t be set up or reached locally. |
| Face ID or fingerprint | To unlock the app on your phone. Your fingerprint or face never leaves your phone and we never see it. | Use your phone’s PIN or pattern. |
| Alarm volume | Only after you tap to turn the alarm sound up, and only the alarm volume changes. | The alarm plays at your current alarm volume. |
4Camera footage and alerts
Your cameras are in your home, and you decide where they point. Person detection runs on the camera itself. Video travels from the camera, through our camera platform, to your phone.
- Your footage is yours. We handle it only to deliver the service to you.
- We don’t watch it. Our team looks at footage only if you ask support for help and give permission, or where the law requires it.
- We don’t use it for anything else. No advertising, no profiling and no training AI models on your home.
- Impempe! reaches the people you chose. When you tap Impempe!, or don’t answer in time, we alert your emergency contacts and household members who use the app. The alert says an alarm went off at your home and names the camera. That is an automatic step, and you can change who is alerted in the app.
Alerts depend on your camera, your internet, mobile networks and our providers, so they can be late or missed. See “What the service is not” in the terms.
5People you add: emergency contacts and household members
When you add an emergency contact or invite someone to your household, you give us their name and mobile number. You must have their agreement first: tell them what Kleva Khaya is and that we will alert them when your alarm goes off.
- They can ask us to remove them at any time, and we’ll let you know.
- We use their details only to send them your alerts and invitations, never for marketing.
- A contact who uses the app can choose whether to receive alerts, and whether to share their location with you if that option is offered.
- People you invite can see what the household settings let them see, and you can remove them whenever you like.
6Why we use it
POPIA lets us process personal information only for a lawful reason. Ours are:
| Reason | What it covers |
|---|---|
| To provide the service you signed up for | Your account, cameras, alerts, emergency contacts, support, delivery, installation and billing. |
| To meet the law | Tax and accounting records, and responding to lawful requests from authorities. |
| Our legitimate interests | Keeping our systems secure, preventing fraud, fixing faults and making the service more reliable. |
| Your consent | Marketing messages, and anything else we ask you about first. You can withdraw consent at any time, and it won’t affect the service. |
We only send you marketing by SMS, email or push if you say yes, and every message tells you how to stop them. We don’t sell your information, we don’t use it for advertising, and we don’t track you across other apps or websites.
8Information stored outside South Africa
Some providers process information outside South Africa. Our camera platform’s cloud is in Central Europe. Sign-in codes go through a messaging provider in the United States, and push notifications go through Google’s global network. Payments are processed in South Africa.
Where information leaves South Africa we make sure it is protected to a standard that matches POPIA: the country has similar privacy law, or the provider is bound by a written agreement that gives the same protection, or you have agreed, as section 72 of POPIA requires.
9How long we keep it
We keep information only as long as we need it, then delete it or make it anonymous.
| Information | How long |
|---|---|
| Alert pictures saved on your phone | Up to 100 MB in total; the oldest are removed first. They stay in the app’s private space on your phone. |
| Emergency contacts | Until you remove them or close your account |
| Invoices and payment records | 5 years after the transaction, as tax law requires |
10Deleting your account and information
You can ask us to delete your Kleva Khaya account and the information linked to it at any time. This page is the place to find how, so it can be reached without installing the app.
To ask: email support@klevakhaya.co.za from the address or write from the mobile number on your account, or message support in the app. We check it’s really you, then confirm when it is done, within 30 days. Asking is free.
What happens when we delete your account:
- Your account, homes, household members, emergency contacts, camera links and saved alert history are deleted or made anonymous.
- Cameras linked to your account are unlinked. A rented camera must still be returned to us.
- We keep invoices and payment records for 5 years, because tax law requires it, and a minimal record of the deletion itself. Anything we are legally required to keep is kept only for that purpose.
- Your emergency contacts stop receiving alerts from you.
- You can also remove a single contact, household member or camera yourself in the app, without closing your account.
11How we protect it
- Everything between your phone, your cameras and our systems is encrypted in transit.
- Our internal business systems aren’t reachable from the public internet. Only the payment pages are.
- Staff access is limited to what their job needs, and bound by confidentiality. Support staff can’t read your sign-in codes, and message text is hidden from our operations tools.
- On your phone, the app keeps its sign-in credentials in the phone’s secure storage.
- If we have reason to believe your information has been accessed without authority, we tell you and the Information Regulator as soon as reasonably possible.
You can help too: keep your phone locked, never share a sign-in code, and change any default password on a camera you bring yourself.
12Your rights
Under POPIA you can:
- ask whether we hold information about you, and get a copy of it
- ask us to correct or delete information that is wrong, out of date or no longer needed
- object to us using your information, including for marketing
- withdraw consent you gave us
- complain to the Information Regulator
Ask by email at support@klevakhaya.co.za. We check it’s really you, then reply within 30 days. Asking is free.
If you live outside South Africa and a law such as the EU or UK GDPR applies to you, you have the equivalent rights under it, and we will honour them.
13Children
The app and service are for people 18 or older. We don’t knowingly collect information from anyone under 18, and the app is not aimed at children. If you think a child has given us information, tell us and we will delete it.
Cameras in your home may record children who live or visit there. Please place them with care, and never share footage of children except with the police or as the law allows.
14Cookies and this website
This website uses only what it needs to work. There are no advertising cookies and no tracking for other companies, and the website doesn’t take payments or card details.
The pages load their icons from Google Fonts, so Google can see your IP address and browser when a page loads. Our own fonts and pictures come from our site. If we add privacy-friendly visit counts, we will say so here.

Terms of use and service
17The app and the app stores
We give you a personal, non-transferable licence to use the Kleva Khaya app on phones you own or control, for the camera service, while your account is open. Please don’t copy, reverse-engineer, resell or interfere with the app, or use it to harm others.
- These terms are between you and us only. Apple Inc. and Google LLC are not parties to them and are not responsible for the app, its content, support, maintenance, warranty or any claim about it.
- If you got the app from the Apple App Store, Apple is a third-party beneficiary of these terms and may enforce them against you. Apple’s standard terms for licensed apps also apply to your use.
- Google Play’s terms of service apply to your download of the app from Google Play.
- We pay for and invoice the camera service ourselves, through PayFast. You do not buy it from Apple or Google, so they take no part of what you pay.
- The app needs a compatible phone and an up-to-date operating system, and may need you to update it to keep working.
18This website
- This website gives information only. It doesn’t take orders, payments or cancellations.
- Prices can change. The app shows exactly what you’ll pay before you pay anything.
- Please don’t copy our name, logo or design, or try to break or overload the site.
19Your account
- You must be 18 or older, and the details you give must be true.
- Sign-in codes go to your mobile number, so keep it current and never share a code.
- Creating an account is free, and doesn’t start a service or a charge.
- You are responsible for household members you invite, and can remove them at any time.
- You can close your account at any time. See “Deleting your account and information” in the privacy notice.
- We may suspend an account used for fraud or abuse. Where we can, we warn you first.
20The camera service
- The service runs month to month, with no fixed term.
- It includes the Kleva Khaya app, person-detection alerts, the Impempe! and I know them alert, and alerts to your emergency contacts.
- It starts when you register your first camera in the app, not when you pay.
- We may improve or change features, and will tell you about changes that matter.
21Rented cameras
- A rented camera stays ours. Take reasonable care of it, and don’t open, modify, sell or lend it.
- A camera you bring yourself stays yours, must be a compatible model, and we aren’t responsible for its hardware.
22Paying
- Your first payment is made upfront, and covers your first month from the day you register a camera. Your next invoice is adjusted pro-rata so you pay only for the days you get.
- After that, we send each month’s invoice on the 25th, due by the 1st.
- Pay by automatic monthly subscription, or pay each invoice yourself.
23Using cameras responsibly
Cameras are powerful, so please use them with care for the people around you:
- Point cameras at your own property. Avoid your neighbours’ windows and yards, and film as little of the street as you can.
- Put up a visible notice where cameras record visitors or people who work in your home, and tell domestic workers and other staff where the cameras are.
- Recording conversations you are not part of, without consent, can be unlawful. Turn audio off where it isn’t needed.
- Never use the service to watch, harass or stalk anyone.
- Share footage only with the police, or as the law allows. You are responsible for footage you download or share.
- Only add an emergency contact or household member who has agreed to it.
24What the service is not
Kleva Khaya is not armed response, not a monitored alarm and not an emergency service. It doesn’t call the police for you. Nobody at Kleva Khaya watches your cameras.
It needs power, Wi-Fi, internet, mobile signal and our providers’ systems to work, so alerts can be delayed or missed, and a person detection can be wrong or missed. Your emergency contacts and neighbours aren’t obliged to respond, and we can’t promise that anyone will arrive or how quickly.
In an emergency, call SAPS on 10111, or 112 from a mobile phone. Don’t rely on Kleva Khaya as your only protection.
25Other companies’ services
The service depends on other companies, such as our camera platform, Google’s notification service, our SMS and payment providers, and your mobile network and internet provider. We choose them with care, but we don’t control them, and their outages can affect the service. Their own terms may apply to the parts of the service they provide.
26Ending the service
- Return rented cameras as described above.
- After you close your account, we keep and delete your information as set out in the privacy notice.
27Our responsibility
We provide the service with reasonable care and skill. We are not responsible for:
- loss caused by crime, break-ins or other events the service could not reasonably prevent
- outages of power, internet, mobile networks or our providers’ systems
- misuse of the service or the cameras
28Disputes and the law
These terms are governed by South African law. If a part of them can’t be enforced, the rest still applies. They are the whole agreement about the service, together with the service terms you accept in the app.
